Values of Batik

Batik was one of the World Intangible Heritage according to the UNESCO. So, batik have its own value that would convince the UNESCO organization to accept and include it. Some values are the Historical Value, Scientific Value, Social Value and Aesthetic Value.

Historical Value

The historical value of batik was that it has a descent history. Batik was used by kings because of their belief. Batik was created because they want their king or rulers to have prosperity and protection from the evil and most important a good luck on things that he or she done. The historical value was still seen today as for batik was a cultural heritage that nobody could resist. The patterns that we saw were actually symbolizing purity and good things that could help or guide the person to the day ahead. Nowadays batik was seen as traditional clothing for us to wear on special occasion or either daily wear.

Aesthetic Value

Batik has its beauty too. The combination of pattern and colors enhance the beauty of batik. The beauty of batik was seen from its patterns of flowers, curved lines and others. Beauty was also shown when fashion designers start putting or adding batik patterns on their designs. In my opinion batik had its own inner beauty that was not only seen on physical appearance. Batik designs were simple but elegant. Traditional rituals and occasions still use the theme batik because it symbolizes peace and simplicity. People also like to wear batik because it was unique and interesting. The patterns were symmetrical too.

Social and Economic Value

The economic value of batik was that it could be sold by shops and vendors. Batik created many beneficial advantages where both sides, seller and buyer, could get a satisfying trade. Batik trading had also been popular because foreigners or tourists would want to buy batik in Indonesia because they know that it was Indonesia authentic cultural heritage. Collectors from around the world hunt for different patterns and designs of batik. Not only that, museums also adds batik as once collection of the museum. It brings benefits to the museum one because people would visit the museum to see the designs of batik and read the history.

Scientific Value

Technology in making batik:

On the past, people uses canting to trace the lines of batik designs. They didn’t have computer or have any idea to improve the technology they had used. But now things had change, they uses printed batik using the technology of stamping so that drawing the patterns doesn’t take longer time to make the design. The design would also be symmetrical and alike one another.

Math:

It was symmetrical and it has a unique pattern that makes it interesting. Not only that, math was seen from different perspective. The symmetrical pattern actually makes me it looks better and neat. Unique lines that was added also shown calculation to make the pattern more realistic.
